courses for the fall

I know … I shouldn’t be thinking about fall courses. But I am actually really excited about them and I thought you all would be interested.

Social Work Practice in Mental Health
This will teach me more knowledge and skills needed to practice social work in a range of mental health settings. I am so very excited about this course mainly because I got the professor I most wanted. I feel strongly that she is the reason I chose ECU and I just want to absorb as much as possible from her during my short year.

Advanced Policy in Mental Health: A Social Work Perspective
This will be an advanced understanding of federal, state, and local policies related to social work practice in mental health settings. Emphasis on professionals role as client advocate in policy decision making and program development. Seriously, could I have picked a field more interesting?!?! (Well, in my biased opinion no.)

Attachment and Trauma
This is also taught by Dr. Arnd-Caddigan, who I had for Psychopathology this past summer and will have in the first course I talked about. This elective will guide me in what I want to do with my career. For those that aren’t familiar with these terms, go here if you are interested. Attachment and Trauma (in reference to children) will be the focus of my therapy. Basically, attachment is a reciprocal process by which an emotional connection develops between an infant and his/her primary caregiver. It influences the child’s physical, neurological, cognitive, and psychological development. It becomes the basis for development of basic trust or mistrust, and shapes how the child will relate to the world, learn, and form relationships throughout life. Did you know that 1 out of 50 children under the age of 12 months experiences any form of trauma that disrupts this attachment. These children are the ones I will be working with.

Finally, I have my field placement 3 days a week along with a seminar on 1 day. My field placement is a the Peace College Counseling Center. I will write more I am sure once I get started, but for now I am just looking forward to working with people I have the most utmost respect for and having this amazing opportunity.

I can’t wait to get back into the field!!
